Food, Glorious Food

After last night's massive meal - we decided to have a late breakfast & being us, we chose something a little untraditional... Nothing like spicy spaghetti... Or Pesto penne to kick start the day! Followed by my final French coffee. It was a short drive to Dunkerque & after an accidental tour of the city centre - we boarded the ferry for our 2 hour sail back to the UK... Where we had a few games of Uno. The sun shone & the sea was calm. And there was more pasta for us to sample... Hugo was ready for his... But Sime was slowing down. And well yeh... Spending the night near Dover & then tomorrow we're homeward bound! Our month away has flown & although we're looking forward to seeing everyone, I still feel sad to leave France...  I'm also peed off that I've left my latest book, with only 3 pages left to read & our shampoo bar (complete with tin) at the hotel in Bourges! Had to use hotel shampoo this morning which has caused my hair

Another cryptic subject title, and why not, but all will be explained in good time................ We left the Christina Hotel in Bourges this morning after a marginally better night's sleep and a mild interrogation from the day's manager about why I didn't leave our car keys at reception when we parked it in the hotel garage. I tried to explain that Jean Luc didn't ask for them, but he wasn't listening. He was one of life's serious people. You know the type- a grown-up. All close shaves and pointy shoes, fois gras and Pastis, art house film on a Friday and dreams of middle management. Middle class aspirations & midriff bulge. Middle everything really and middle nothing. I couldn't wait to leave. Really, I wanted him to bother to look up from his bloody important desk and accept the smack of my fist between his eyes. Git. Now to balance things a bit, I can be on the snobby side sometimes. I inherited it from my mother along with a twitch or two that s

Sundays are perfect for city sightseeing... Bourges Cathedral. A huge place. On a quiet Sunday afternoon! Impressive & peaceful. Top of the north tower. Only Sime & Hugo were brave enough to climb the 396 steps... To the top! Stunning views. In every direction. They could see for miles... Happy Chappies. The Holy Sepulchre in the crypt, erected in 1520. Part of the Rood Screen, erected in 1250 & defaced by protestants in 1562 during a siege of the city. The outer gallery of the crypt, which has 2 windows. Closed area of the crypt - looks creepy! Exit of crypt. Unearthly creatures! Intricate detail of the northern entrance. Gargoyles were quite menacing. Southern entrance. Historic quarter. Lots of half-timbered buildings. Very upmarket during the day, but rapping vampires seem to come out at night! Clair de Lune. Tomorrow we travel to the outskirts of Lille for our final night. Bonne Nuit! Kay :)

Back to beautiful blue skies for our journey north... A lovely journey on quiet autoroutes. Travelling amongst the mountains... And driving into them... We like tunnels... Weeee!!! Back over the Millau Bridge. A bit more interesting this time... Into the Auvergne. And villages on the tops of volcanos. The most famous volcano - Le Puy-de-Dome. Delightful ladies loos on autoroute picnic areas, with a choice of filthy toilet... Or the more popular- hole in the floor!  Yes, they are grippy foot plates to stop you from slipping... Wouldn't mind so much if they were clean, but I don't think I've ever found a clean public loo in France - roadside bushes are far superior! We amazingly travelled 370 miles in under 6 hours, so arrived at  Hotel Le Christina  in Bourges mid afternoon. Nice hotel, though a little cramped & walls like paper!  Last night, had our favourite meal of the holiday at  La Scala , then returned to the hotel for the worst night's sleep of

Last day at the house today!  So we thought we'd choose some family photos for the blog of our time here... Walking back to the house.  Making the most of the roof terrace! Collecting baguettes. In the kitchen. French public loos are always an experience, can even give you a good soaking! Pizza van - French pizzas are amazing! Caught in the wing mirror. Not quite Charlie's Angels! Nearly fell... Hard at work. Nothing better to do! No idea! Supposedly collecting kindling for the fire... Schnow! City Kitty. Troubador! One of life's luxuries! Cold... Very cold... Resting. Snapping. Happy. Tired. Nosey. Spanish ice cream. Bourbon fuelled sing-along! Tomorrow we're heading north to spend 2 nights in the city of Bourges, so early start in the morning! Kay, Sime & Hugo xxx
