Just Talking
I think it's a funny word - Talk... It doesn't sound very friendly, but it's nice to do. We talk all the time, infact probably far too much (especially Sime)! What's even funnier is that we spend most of our time together & we still find lots to talk about. Sometimes it means that the things we intended to do - just don't get done. Sime's Dad is also a talker & they can spend hours on the phone together, Hugo's the same. Saying that - all 3 of our kids when together are pretty non-stop talking, even the cats join in too!
I suppose most of what we talk about is complete nonsense, but it makes us laugh - we like to make up stories about people that we don't know very well (like our neighbours & the property owners we work with - sshh)! Imagining their lives is good fun & Sime does wonderful impersonations of them, especially the women (in a very Monty Python kind of way). When my Nan was with us, she used to go for day care twice a week & she had a friend there who was a wonderful character, she was called Gladys Bint - isn't that a great name? Well Gladys was quite posh & could be quite stroppy at times, especially if anyone went near her mountain of bags she brought in with her each week... Sime managed to (& still does) capture her so well, even Nan would cry with laughter (but would then go on to smack him for being so awful)!
It's not just people that we find fascinating, it's places too. We love to talk about travel, about where we'd like to go. There's so much of the world we'd love to see, but how would we get around the "no flying" rule we decided on? Top of our long haul list are: Canada, New Zealand & Japan. Will we ever go?
We have 5 maps on the walls of our dining room, the room where we spend most of our time. One is of the local area, one is of Cornwall, then there's one of the UK, one of Europe & the last one is a World map, so no wonder travel is on our minds so much...
Most of all we talk about where we want to live: we want a totally isolated place surrounded by trees & mountains, with a beautiful lake near by... A tiny cottage, that's simple to maintain & easy to keep warm, it has to have it's own water supply & not have mains electricity. Where we live now is in an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" (AONB), which is an official classification for a beautiful area of green land in the UK & we feel very lucky to be here, but it's just not remote enough for us. We would like our nearest neighbours to be at least a mile away!
We are lucky to be content just with each other & see friends now & again. We like being at home & don't feel the need to go out much (other than work). We like pottering about, cooking together & talking! Life is good, but there's always room for improvement...
